The first thing to consider when buying a metal detector is the price. Certainly the more expensive metal detectors will have more features, but if you do not want to break the bank then it well worth considering purchasing a cheaper model. The prices of metal detectors range from $50 up to $400 and it all depends on what features you want.
There are some metal detectors which use Beat Frequency Oscillation (BFO) which contains two coils of wire (one large and one small). The larger one can be found in the search coil of the detector while the smaller one is found in the system control pack. These coils are connected to the oscillator which produces a pulse of current and this passes through the coils to generate radio waves. There is a receiver within the system control pack that receives the radio waves and produces a series of tones (beeps) based upon the frequencies coming from the radio waves. As soon as the detector search coil encounters a metal object (say a coin) it surrounds it with a magnetic field which caused interference to the frequency and thus the tone produced by the detector will alter.
Certainly when looking at purchasing a metal detector the best ones to choose are those that are fitted with BFO technology as it is both the easiest kind to use and are also cheaply available to own.
Another kind of metal detector is those that use PI (Pulse Induction). This uses a single coil or even a series of coils which work as a receiver and transmitter. Short bursts of electricity pass through the coil or wire causing magnetism and the magnetic fields will reverse their polarity if the bursts of electricity are cut off or stopped. Then more pulses are created when a sharp electrical spike is produced and this whole process is repeated and will give off different kinds of echoes depending on what kind of metal is detected. Unfortunately this kind of metal detector is not suited for discriminating between different kinds of metal or coins as is better suited to being used in areas where salt water and metals are detectable.
Finally we come on to the metal detectors known as VLF (very low frequency) models which have two search coils. The first coil is the "transmitter coil" and this quickly transmits electricity to the other coil known as the "receiver coil". This one receives the frequencies that are bounced back any objects that the coil detects and this type of metal detector is best for use when just looking for different types of metal and not one in particular such as gold.
